Flotilla Underway Training

Flotilla 14 Operational Facilities conduct training during each and every patrol.  Standard patrols can include training in towing, man overboard procedures, anchoring, navigation, small boat handling, emergency procedures, communications procedures and many other topics.

The Flotilla Staff Officers for Operations and Member Training conduct scenario based training throughout the year to build on the routine training conducted during weekly patrols.

Flotilla 14 Operational Facilities also take part in other on-the-water training planned and scheduled by the Division and Sector commands.

Auxiliary Operations Specialty Courses

Every Auxiliarist can specialize in any or all of six different specialty areas in the operational and administrative fields. Successful completion of a specialty course signifies the Auxiliarist has gained considerable knowledge in that field. The six specialty areas with associated closed-book testing are:

 Seamanship (AUXSEA)

 Advanced Coastal Navigation (AUXACN)

 Communications (AUXCOM)

 Search and Rescue (AUXSAR)

 Patrols (AUXPAT)

 Weather (AUXWEA)

Click Here to learn more about the Operations Specialty Course program.

Classes are usually taught at Coast Guard Station Destin.  Besides theoretical knowledge, the courses require a degree of practical knowledge. For each specialty course, there is a national Coast Guard closed-book examination. An Auxiliarist completing all six courses receives the AUXOP designation, a certificate, and a uniform insignia to wear.

Aids-to-Navigation (ATON) Verifier Course

This course provides members with the skills necessary to verify the location and proper operation of Aids-to-Navigation (buoys and other navigational markers).  The course qualifies the member as an ATON verifier.  Specific course objectives are:

  • Acquire general knowledge of the responsibilities of the Auxiliary in the conduct of Aids-to-Navigation and Chart Updating patrols and missions

  • Become familiar with the preparation an Aids-to-Navigation or Chart Updating patrol or mission

  • Become familiar with the tools and equipment required to support Aids-to-Navigation and Chart Updating patrols

The ATON Verifier course is taught at Coast Guard Station Destin by the Flotilla 14 Aids-to-Navigation Staff Officer (FSO-AN).

Team Coordination Training (TCT)

To enhance and maintain skills inherent to the teamwork needed for safe and well-executed patrols, Crew members and Coxswains are required to attend training seminars called "Team Coordination Training."  Updates are required every five years.  Team Coordination Training stresses seven personal skills:  adaptability/flexibility assertiveness, communication, decision-making, leadership, and situational awareness in order minimize risk during the execution of tasks during a patrol.  These seminars are usually taught at Coast Guard Station Destin as required and at various locations throughout the Division.
